Honoring Sally Hulugalle – the Geneva Prize for Human Rights in Psychiatry

Sally received a special mention from the Jury of the Geneva Prize for Human Rights in Psychiatry during its 4th session in Geneva in 2008. Presided over by Ms. Ruth Dreifuss, Former President of the Swiss Confederation, the session recognized Sally’s outstanding contributions to protecting human rights and improving the well-being of individuals with mental illness.

The official certificate was presented on February 28, 2025, by Professor Norman Sartorius at the Rethinking Mental Health Conference in Sri Lanka, an event graced by Madam Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. On this special occasion, Ayesha Hulugalle, Sally’s daughter, accepted the award on behalf of the family. There was a presentation and sharing of Sally’s teachings and impactful work.

This recognition is a testament to Sally’s unwavering dedication to advocating community-based mental health. Her love for life and commitment to kindness, dignity, decency has left a lasting impression on the community and generations to come.
